Our Programmes
MMFPA delivers a range of integrated programmes designed to reduce fire risk, build community capacity, and strengthen coordinated response across the Mnquma and Mbhashe Local Municipalities. Our work is guided by the National Veld and Forest Fire Act (Act 101 of 1998) and shaped by the realities of rural and communal land management.
Fire Prevention & Preparedness
Prevention is our first line of defence. MMFPA works with land users, traditional leaders, and municipalities to identify high-risk areas, enforce firebreak compliance, and develop community-level fire management plans. We coordinate seasonal readiness assessments and support early warning systems, including monitoring of the Fire Danger Index (FDI) issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).Firefighting & Emergency Response
When fire breaks out, MMFPA coordinates rapid, organised response. We work alongside municipal fire services, disaster management centres, and trained community volunteers to contain and extinguish veld and forest fires before they cause irreversible damage to grazing land, crops, livestock, and homes. Our response network operates across rural areas where formal fire services have limited reach.Awareness & Education
Many fires in our area are preventable. MMFPA conducts community awareness campaigns, school outreach, and public education initiatives to change behaviours around open burning, land clearing, and fire safety. We engage traditional leadership structures to embed fire awareness messages in community communication channels.Training & Skills Development
MMFPA invests in people. We deliver accredited and non-accredited training in basic firefighting, fire management principles, and community emergency response. Our training programme specifically targets youth and volunteers, building a pipeline of skilled community fire practitioners who understand both the technical and governance aspects of veld fire management.Training Session
